Zambia’s Vice President Inonge Wina (Mrs) shamelessly lied that political prisoners Afumba Mombotwa and others were mere detainees still awaiting sentencing.

Zambian Vice President Inonge Wina has lied in Parliament that there are no political prisoners in Zambia, stating further that jailed Barotseland Administrator General Afumba Mombotwa and two others are only detainees who are yet to be sentenced.

Inonge Wina said this today, Friday 14th October 2016, during the Vice President's question time.

Sikongo law maker Mundia Ndalamei asked why the House was earlier in the week told that Zambia had no political prisoners when Afumba Mombotwa, Inambao Kalima and Likando Pelekelo were in prison at Mwembeshi serving ten year jail sentences each over politically motivated charges.

"Yesterday you said the country has no political prisoners but I have here Afumba Mombotwa, Sylvester (Inambao) Kalima and Likando Pelekelo; are they not political prisoners?" Hon. Ndalamei asked.

But in her response, Zambia’s Vice President Inonge Wina shamelessly lied that the three were mere detainees still awaiting sentencing.

"Those three names mentioned have not been sentenced, they are still remandees," Wina lied before the Zambian parliament.

The facts, however, are that the three were arrested on 5th December, 2014 for high treason and endured a year long trial in Zambia’s High Court at Kabwe. This was after they had been incarcerated for over eight months without trial. In a twisted turn of events after trial, the three were convicted on a lesser charge of attempting to ‘usurp powers of the executive’ for their role in implementing the 2012 Barotseland National Council (BNC) unanimous resolutions which called for Barotseland self-determination.

In sentencing the trio on the 9th of March, 2016, DOMINIC YETA SICHINGA, SC, JUDGE, said that the accused, AFUMBA MOMBOTWA - A1, PELEKELO LIKANDO - A2, and SYLVESTER KALIMA INAMBAO - A3, were charged and convicted upon trial of the offence of TREASON FELONY Contrary to Section 45(b) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The particulars of the offence, as read out by Judge Sichinga during sentencing, were that AFUMBA MOMBOTWA, PELEKELO LIKANDO, and SYLVESTER KALIMA INAMBAO, on a date unknown but between 1st March, 2012 and 20th August, 2013 at Mongu, Sioma, Senanga, Livingstone and other places unknown in the Republic of Zambia, jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown, did prepare and endeavour to have Western Province secede from the rest of the part of the Sovereign Republic of Zambia.
