BAROTSE CHANGE: Further reflections on Freedom of Independence versus Freedom of Dependence!

The much awaited historic 24th October; the Independence Day for Northern Rhodesia, is once again here this month of October. Since 1964 when Northern Rhodesia was pronounced independent from the British colonial rule the event has been recurrent yearly, just like any other important anniversary. Unfortunately, it will forever symbolize the ironic climax of the paradoxical 48 years union between Northern Rhodesia and Barotseland dubbed as Zambia from 1964 to 2012. This union is what rightfully qualifies to be termed as “FREEDOM OF DEPENDENCE” for both territories in 1964, as opposed to “FREEDOM OF INDEPENDENCE” of March, 2012 for Barotseland and earlier on 1964 for Northern Rhodesia.

The assertion is very true because while this day marks Zambia’s national day, celebrating her independence from her colonial master Britain, as a colony protectorate. Therefore, technically speaking it is indeed an independence celebration for Northern Rhodesia and not Barotseland because as an elite protectorate, Barotseland was not a conquered territory but just exchanged hands from the Britons to the Zambians, and regrettably, to subsequently be colonised for 48 years! In effect, this has never really been Barotseland’s independence. It was time for FREEDOM OF INDEPENDENCE for Zambia (Northern Rhodesia), YES! But it was time for FREEDOM OF DEPENDENCE on each other by both territories. Significantly, getting out of the repressive arm of colonization by Britain, Northern Rhodesia undertook to colonize Barotseland as though to avenge on us all the colonization anathemas Britain meted on her; most of which Britain never really committed against Northern Rhodesia. The agenda was so ill-conceived such that, instead of ratifying the Treaty, the new Zambian government quickly abrogated the Barotseland Agreement 1964 (BA ’64) in 1969 barely about five years from the historic signing of the Political “Marriage Certificate” BA ’64. Interestingly, Zambia could not divorce Barotseland concurrently with the abrogation of BA ’64 but instead chose to cohabit and attempted to assimilate her, a move that could not work. This move showed Zambia’s quest for not only freedom of independence from Britain, but also freedom of dependence on Barotseland. For how long this marriage of convenience would last only time could tell!

To the contrary, the Barotse Government’s move in 1964 to join Northern Rhodesia and form Zambia was a reflection of her desire for freedom of dependence on Zambia. There was no total freedom of independence yet for her. But like newlyweds, all was engulfed in the gab of the flattery vows from the Government of the Republic of Zambia, GRZ, and a honeymoon that only lasted a few years. What followed thereon was estrangement and evil surmising of all sorts. Alas! The good idea then never worked. Instead of being a real marriage “until death do us part” as it were, it turned out to be an experimental and abortive union with Northern Rhodesia unceremoniously and surreptitiously. Fortunately, the posterity of Barotseland came to know what transpired and how to redress the situation to save the Barotse family image in the local and international arena, hence the transformative 2012 Barotse National Council, BNC. The outgone forty-eight (48) years period will then be remembered for the futile efforts Barotse made for possible restoration of the BA’64 and reconciliation with Northern Rhodesia, within the ambits of International Law. Unfortunately, Barotseland only got paid with vanity of effort, human rights abuses, killings, maimings, insidious offences and the like!

Then why should restoration make sense now when there is time no longer?

Thereafter, Barotseland decided to embark on her course to complete FREEDOM OF INDEPENDENCE agenda from the yoke of servitude to Zambia (dubbed herein as Freedom of Dependence) in SELF REINSTATEMENT, understanding that outside this noble legal and political framework would render the demise of Barotse nation into total oblivion. Failing to understand this present political truth is like trying to bring back USSR into existence. Our union with Northern Rhodesia has failed irreparably such that Zambia is a misnomer and as defunct as the outspoken BA ’64 today. That is why our leaders amply stated that “there is nothing more important/powerful as an idea whose time has come”

Summatively, bahesu, the yearly Zambian independence celebration on 24th October is quite historic and commemorative of certain realities to Barotseland. This year it particularly earmarks the dawn of yet another reality to be written on a clean new page of the subsequent 50 years, post-Zambia’s Golden Jubilee of independence and the 2012 BNC’s UDI; with Barotseland out of the failed political union.

Despite the bad evil omens the 24th October, 1964 was laden with for Barotseland, this commemorative day is still very important to both Northern Rhodesia and Barotseland foremost that:

1. For Zambia it is (political) independence celebration as usual; bearing a choice theme emphasizing the year’s considered and marked 54th independence commemoration. In actual sense, the celebrations have been an entrenchment of hegemony over Barotseland! Thank God for the historic imperative 2012 BNC Resolutions and UDI Mandate.

2. For Barotseland, it is a time to seriously lament and ponder on the reminiscent abhorrence, by all well-meaning Barotseland citizens, of the stigma and near extinction the day purported to bring upon the state and nation of our country Barotseland. This day would rightly be designated as the NATIONAL MONTH AND DAY OF MOURNING in Barotseland calendar of events! Otherwise, THERE IS NOTHING FOR BAROTZIS TO CELEBRATE JOINTLY WITH ZAMBIA ON 24TH OCTOBER. This is true because of the long list of deaths, gruesome human right violations and other gross evils meted against Barotseland since 1964 to date, on account of the forced annexation to Northern Rhodesia, and rogue unitary statehood as Zambia.

Barotse Change pleads that all Barotzis heed God’s call to get out of the leaven of Zambianism and learn lessons from both our 48 years of wilderness experience in “Zambia” in a parallelism to the journey of Israelites of old from Egypt to the promised land Canaan – God’s will ultimately will triumph despite anybody’s dissidence. Each was supposed to be a short journey to the target destination but took well over 40 years of wondering to and fro, not by God’s choice but owing to their high order level of compromise against God’s will. Ours, therefore, is to obey God (Nyambe), our leader and remain focused as we embark on this mammoth task of rebuilding our pride and ruins of our glory land, Bulozi, into a nation among nations forevermore!

And in Acts 17:26 we read “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation”. All historic and Biblical facts declare the fact that Barotseland is indeed the land of our forefathers meant for our habitation as our sovereign land and unique country; NOT a Western Province.

Lessons from the sacred history concerning Freedom of Independence and Freedom of Dependence.

It is interesting to note that what should have been a week’s journey then ended up lasting for forty years of wondering to get into the land of promise, Canaan, mainly due to disbelief or apostasy against God. As for Barotseland, it took over forty years to free herself from the shackles of Zambian servitude mainly due to the hope of restoration of the already abrogated and repudiated BA’64 Treaty. What a disgrace for both BRE and GRZ to despise God’s will and look for a solution that is no longer tenable! Consult the gods of Egypt and they will confirm it to you that this was Pharaoh’s fallacy! Freedom of Dependence had expired and it was time up for Freedom of Independence especially for God’s children, but Pharaoh refused to concede and the results were obvious!

On the other hand, the Bible records that a lot of drama surfaced among the Israelites prior to entry into the land of promise, such that only those under 20 years crossed over into Canaan. Also, that before the complete independence of Israelites from Egypt God had to give the Egyptians a hard lesson, in form of plagues, to know that no one can dare stand in between God and His promises for his children and still remain safe and a conqueror! Without necessarily sounding to be a prophet of doom, ultimately, Zambia needs to know that it will never have peace within until it comes to true terms with the reality of Barotseland’s sovereignty.

Finally, the Israelites overcame in God – and so are we too.

In Numbers 14:4 we read “AND THEY SAID ONE TO ANOTHER, LET US MAKE A CAPTAIN, AND LET US RETURN INTO EGYPT”. This was the desire of the Israelites at the instigation of the ten (10) false spies or leaders on account of their false report regarding their land of promise – Canaan. Surely God was not pleased at all because by so doing they were trying to prove their God a liar concerning His promise to them through their forefathers. Could this be what the BRE - Zambia extortionists are reportedly trying to do through their government modified options (GMOs) to the defunct BA’64 with GRZ, by creating a fake illegal BA ‘2018 and U-turn route against God‘s promise for Barotseland?

And then, for the sake of the two and ten spies and their respective camps of natives the fearful pronouncement came as recorded in Numbers 14:29;

“Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me. Doubtless, ye shall not come into the land, [concerning] which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.”

Obviously, there are promised consequences in betraying God’s plans for His children. And in Barotseland’s case, one doom will be in form of loss of Purely Barotzish Mind-set or citizenship by those who are “old enough” to think that Barotseland’s Freedom of Independence is a made up story or non-starter. The perished generation in the wilderness then was due to their unbelief and love for foreign beauty. Similarly, those who are wishing against Barotseland Independence are doing so owing to their disbelief in Barotse Change AND love of foreign Zambian beauty in form of, businesses, marriages and other foreign investments thereof. Proponents of Barotseland’s complete independence may seem to be fewer than Zambians and the cadres of our enemies but like in the case of Caleb and Joshua, the good news is that with God on our side we are the majority and certainly are crossing over into the land of promise – new Barotseland; completely independent from Zambia.

Finally, “But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.”

Ultimately, I wish to let all my fellow BAROTSELAND YOUTH know that we HAVE A MAJOR ROLE TO PLAY IN THE CONCLUSION OF THE STORY OF BAROTSE CHANGE TO COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT HOMELAND - Bulozi. The term youth, in Barotse Change, signifies both the biological youth and adults of Barotseland genuinely converted to the truth of Barotse Change and rightfully branded with a PURELY BAROTZISH MINDSET. These were/are the little ones preyed upon by the Zambians but, finally, they will know that the despised land of Barotseland is actually flowing with milk and honey – a land of bounties!
