Only 4% of citizens have voted for the Spanish Prime Minister’s party which suspended self-rule in Catalonia and forced the snap election after dismissing the Catalan government, as the pro-independence parties keep their majority in the Catalan election.
The results of the snap election are a severe blow to the Spanish government which had hoped the vote would halt the push for secession.
Meanwhile, Catalonia secessionist parties have declared victory in the regional elections which attracted a record turnout of more than 82%, dispelling fears that holding the election on a weekday rather than the usual Sunday would hit turnout.
